Dancing Together: Pedagogy of Pas De Deux

  • The Center for Ballet Arts 3928 Pender Drive Suite 200 Fairfax, Virginia, 22030 United States (map)

Especially in classical training, learning how to do Pas de Deux work often looks like learning to do choreography at the same time, rather than how to dance with another person. This approach often leads to difficulty for dancers when they are confronted with unfamiliar material, new dance partners, and more contemporary choreography and choreographic processes. It can also inhibit dancers’ ability to create emotive, trust-based relationships on stage.

This class will explore ways to combat these tendencies by applying contemporary pedagogy in the pursuit of classical and contemporary ballet technique. We will discuss general strategies for introducing non-contact and contact partnering for dance students of all levels, including the ethics of consent around contact with youth students. We will also discuss a programmatic series of movement games designed to build Pas de Deux skills in preparation for partnered pointe work, and a set of specific vocabulary for breaking down partnered material.

This workshop will include both discussion and movement so please dress accordingly. Big lifts and pointe work are not expected.

This is a valuable continuing education opportunity for dance educators, rehearsal assistants, choreographers, and advanced dancers looking to deepen their understanding of partnering and movement collaboration.

*This workshop is lead and taught by Justin Rustle.
